Shut off your main water valve while you call. It’s usually where the water line enters the house: garage, utility closet or near the water heater. Turn it clockwise until it stops.

Flooded rooms or storm waterCall now

Stay out of standing water if the power is on. Don’t touch outlets, cords or appliances in wet areas. Only switch off the breaker if you can reach the panel from somewhere dry.

Sewage or toilet backupCall now

Keep kids and pets away. Don’t try to clean it yourself. Sewage water carries bacteria. Stop using sinks, toilets and showers until it’s been looked at, and keep the door to that area closed.

Right now

In the next 10 minutes.

You don’t need to do everything. Start with the water and your safety, then call.

  1. Shut off the heater’s water.

Turn the cold-water valve on the pipe above the heater clockwise until it stops. If you can’t reach it, shut off the main water valve.

  2. Turn off the power or gas.

Switch off the breaker for an electric heater, or set a gas heater to pilot or off. Only touch the breaker from somewhere dry.

  3. Keep clear of hot water.

Water from a heater can be hot enough to burn. Let it cool before you touch it or the tank.

  4. Take photos.

Photograph the heater, the floor and anything that got wet. Your insurance company may ask for them.

What we do for a water heater leak

We remove the standing water, take moisture readings in the floor, walls and cabinets nearby, and dry what got wet. A plumber handles the heater.

Readings and photos go into your file, so you and your adjuster can see what got wet and how it was dried. Read how water extraction works.

Garage, closet or attic

A heater in the garage often leaks onto concrete that dries fast. In a closet or attic, the water reaches drywall, flooring and ceilings below.

An attic leak can show up as a stain on the ceiling of the room underneath. Readings tell us how far it spread. See water coming through the ceiling.

Insurance and water heater leaks

A sudden tank failure is often treated differently from a slow leak. Your carrier decides coverage, and the heater itself may be treated separately.

We document the loss with photos, moisture readings and drying records either way. Read more about how a claim works with United.

Common questions

Questions we hear often.

Have a different question? We answer 24/7.(405) 519-3568
Can I still use hot water?

Not until a plumber checks the heater. Keep its water supply and its power or gas off in the meantime.

Do you replace water heaters?

A plumber repairs or replaces the heater. We remove the water, dry the area around it and document the damage for your claim.
